Spring Pest Checklist for Nassau County Families

Spring is the most important season for proactive pest management in Nassau County. This room-by-room checklist helps families identify vulnerabilities and act before pest season peaks.

 pest control

Spring in Nassau County arrives alongside a predictable wave of pest activity. Termites swarm. Carpenter ants become active. Mice that overwintered indoors begin to be noticed as they range more freely. Ants follow chemical trails into kitchens. Ticks emerge on the lawn. For Nassau County families, a systematic spring inspection — room by room, zone by zone — catches small problems before they become large ones and identifies the conditions that drive pest activity.

This checklist is organized by area of the home and yard. Work through it in late March or early April for best results, before peak pest season arrives.

Exterior Foundation and Perimeter

Walk the complete perimeter of your home at foundation level. Look for:

- *Mud tubes* on foundation walls (subterranean termite activity) — pencil-width tubes of soil along masonry or concrete

- *Gaps and cracks* in the foundation wall larger than a quarter inch — mouse entry points

- *Soil or mulch contact with wood* — foundation plantings should have a six-inch gap between mulch and any wood element

- *Accumulated leaf debris* against the foundation — prime rodent nesting habitat and carpenter ant moisture source

- *Downspout discharge* — extensions should direct water at least six feet from the foundation

Probe any wood in contact with or near the foundation — deck posts, exterior door frames, lattice skirting — with a screwdriver. Soft or yielding wood indicates moisture damage and potential termite or carpenter ant activity.

Basement and Crawl Space

- Inspect sill plates (the wood member directly on top of the foundation wall) for mud tubes, frass, or soft wood

- Check for standing water or persistent damp spots on the basement floor

- Confirm the dehumidifier is operational and the drainage line is clear

- Inspect basement window wells for debris, standing water, and gaps in the window frame

- Look for rodent droppings along the base of walls, under the stairs, and near the utility area

- Check pipe penetrations (water, gas, HVAC) for gaps — seal any opening larger than a quarter inch with appropriate material

Kitchen and Pantry

- Inspect under the sink for moisture, pipe drips, and drain gap clearance at the cabinet floor — a top priority for odorous house ant and cockroach activity

- Check behind the refrigerator and under the stove for grease accumulation, moisture, and rodent evidence

- Move the refrigerator and examine the floor gap at the back — a common mouse travel and nesting zone

- Inspect the pantry for any signs of stored product pests: tiny moths, small beetles, webbing in grain products

- Seal gaps around all utility penetrations entering the kitchen — particularly the dishwasher water line and the gas line to the range

Bathrooms

- Check under every sink for pipe drips and cabinet floor gaps

- Inspect the caulk seal around the toilet base and tub/shower surround — failing caulk admits moisture and creates pest harborage

- Confirm exhaust fans are functional and vented to the exterior — bathroom humidity drives silverfish and centipede activity

- Look for silverfish or springtail activity in the cabinet under the sink and in the tile grout area

Garage

- Inspect the rubber door seal at the bottom of overhead doors — worn seals leave gaps mice enter through

- Check the door between the garage and the home interior for a functioning door sweep

- Look for rodent evidence along garage walls: droppings, gnaw marks, nesting material

- Inspect the garage ceiling for wasp nest starts under eaves and in corners (small nests in March are easily eliminated; the same nests in August are serious removal projects)

Attic

- Look for evidence of rodent activity: droppings, nesting material, gnaw marks on insulation or wiring

- Check soffit and gable vent screens for tears or failures

- Inspect the attic hatch seal — gaps around hatch frames are common mouse and squirrel entry points

Yard and Landscaping

- Check for yellow jacket and paper wasp nest starts under deck boards, in retaining wall gaps, and in ground depressions

- Inspect birdbaths, pot saucers, gutters, and any container for standing water (mosquito breeding habitat)

- Examine ornamental tree and shrub bases for wood-boring insect frass or carpenter ant activity

- Consider scheduling a professional tick barrier spray if your property borders wooded areas, parks, or brush — particularly important for Nassau County families with children or pets
